Cheaper Home Batteries Program Starts July 1, 2025
The federal government’s new Cheaper Home Batteries Program aims to make battery storage more affordable for more households. While national rollout details are being finalised, some regions are already offering support—including interest-free loans, direct rebates, and pilot programs.
As part of the updated Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), the Cheaper Home Batteries Program will offer upfront discounts to make battery storage more affordable for households and small businesses.
As of the moment, you can still take advantage of the Small-scale technology certificates (STCs) for solar panels and battery rebates of up to $2,100. Together with state rebate programs like Solar Victoria’s solar panel discount of $1,400, you can maximise discounts on top of the STCs.
This government-backed program will support batteries with a usable capacity under 100 kWh, whether installed with a new solar system or added to an existing one. It’s designed to reduce energy bills, boost solar self-use, and ease strain on the electricity grid.
Why the Program Matters
While over 4 million homes in Australia now have rooftop solar panels, only 1 in 40 have a battery. The high cost of solar batteries has kept many people from accessing the full value of their solar energy. This new rebate program changes that.
With upfront discounts covering around 30% of the battery cost, solar households will be able to store excess solar power and use it at night—cutting grid reliance and peak-time usage. The discount amount will vary based on the battery’s usable capacity and will gradually reduce through 2030 as battery prices continue to fall.
The Clean Energy Regulator (CER) will oversee the program, and discounts will be applied through accredited retailers and installers. Best of all, the funding comes from the government—there are no hidden costs for consumers.
The scheme will also include clear standards and responsibilities to make sure batteries are installed safely, legally, and for long-term use.
