What is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program? (Explained Simply)
Australia’s new Cheaper Home Batteries Program is one of the biggest energy incentives we’ve ever seen, a $2.3 billion push to make home batteries affordable for everyday Aussies.
If you’ve read our main guide, you already know the goal:
Make batteries cheaper. Help households use more of their solar. Reduce bills. Strengthen the grid.
This blog expands on that, but explains it in plain English, without the confusion.
1. What the Cheaper Home Batteries Program Actually Does
Launched on 1 July 2025, the program gives you about 30% off upfront when you install a home battery system.
This discount is applied directly to your quote, no forms, no claims, no waiting.
Most homeowners save around $4,000 instantly.
Why the government did this is simple:
| Problem | Government Response |
|---|---|
| 4 million homes have solar, but only 1 in 40 added a battery | Make batteries cheaper |
| Solar is wasted or sold back at low feed-in rates | Help households store their solar |
| Evenings rely heavily on gas and coal | Shift demand using home batteries |
| Energy bills keep rising | Cut grid use by up to 90% |
2. How the Program Works (In Simple Words)
The program uses the same system that made rooftop solar cheap: Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STCs).
Here’s the simple version:
- When a certified installer installs your battery,
- The system creates STCs (based on battery size),
- The installer sells those STCs to the government,
- And gives you the discount upfront.
You pay less right away.
The installer gets reimbursed later.
You don’t deal with any paperwork.
This is the same mechanism we explain in our main guide, and it’s the reason solar became so affordable.

Next Steps
That’s the quick overview. The real value comes from understanding whether you qualify, how much you can save, and which battery setups make the most sense under this program.
If you want all of that in one place, our main guide dives deeper and shows you exactly how to maximise the rebate and avoid the common pitfalls most homeowners miss.
